What is Lazy Eye?
“Lazy eye,” also known as “amblyopia,” is a childhood eye condition in which one eye’s vision does not develop normally. This condition, also known as wandering, crossed, or lazy eye, causes a partial or complete inability to maintain eye alignment or focus on a single point.
What Causes Lazy Eyes?
One eye has far superior focus and vision than the other. As a result, someone with lazy eyes will have clear ideas from one eye while the other produces a blurry image. The long-term effect could be the brain ignoring the blurry image, eventually leading to amblyopia (lazy eye).
When a person’s eyes do not line up as they should, this is referred to as misalignment of the eye. This is referred to as Strabismus and can also lead to amblyopia.
“Strabismus” is a condition in which the eyes point in opposite directions. Both are easily treatable, especially if caught early enough.
Amblyopia affects approximately 2% to 3% of the American population, according to statistics. Most of the time, only one eye is affected. However, amblyopia can occur in both eyes in some cases. If left untreated, a lazy eye can result in permanent vision loss in the affected eye as the brain begins to ignore the image from that eye.
